La Botanica: Bridging Culture and Community Through Herbs and Spices

The Palazzi Community Center Presents: La Botanica

The aroma of fresh herbs and spices filled the air as students and locals alike gathered at the Palazzi Community Center (PCC) for La Botanica, an event which explored the medicinal and culinary uses of plants. Led by Professor Cecilia Ricci of The American University of Florence (AUF) , the presentation captivated the audience with how herbs and spices can be used to nourish and heal the body.

Ricci, an expert in botany and herbal research, presented the subject to a group of students and locals. “We provided insight into different kinds of herbs and spices that can be used for cooking, but also medicinal purposes,” explains Ricci. “Some of these natural ingredients have been used for centuries to heal and treat ailments, and it's fascinating to see how science continues to validate their benefits.”

It's a personal love for Ricci and she was extremely excited to share her love with a wider audience.

“”Botany has always been close to my heart and I love the research behind herbs, spices, and their uses,” says Ricci. “This was a wonderful opportunity to share my knowledge with others.”

The event is meant to be a springboard for personal growth and exploration into the world of herbal medicine following the presentation.

“For some, this might just be an introduction, but for me, it's a chance to expand my research, explore new ideas, and hopefully encourage others to do the same,” Ricci adds.

The event attracted a diverse audience, from study-abroad students to longtime Florence residents. It is commonplace for locals and students to mix at the PCC, and is largely why events are put on.

“This event is not just about herbs and spices,” Ricci says. “It’s about education, connection, and sharing knowledge between students and the broader community.”

A key mission of the Palazzi Community Center is fostering integration between AUF and the local population. While regularly hosting cultural events and workshops, the space provides an extension of the classroom in the community.

“The university has a strong reputation internationally, but many Florentines don't know much about us,” Ricci said. “Events like this create visibility. They allow locals to engage with our students and see how the university contributes to the cultural and educational landscape of the city.”

While most cities remain distinct from its academic culture, Florence intentionally creates interaction between residents and students. The city is filled with student-run cafes and markets that simultaneously serve as classrooms and business for locals to enjoy.

These efforts are a part of a larger movement within The American University of Florence to connect students with the local community.

“I’m not the only professor involved in these initiatives,” Ricci said. “We have a team of faculty members who are just as passionate about fostering integration and expanding students' experiences beyond the classroom.”

Following the presentation, attendees were given herb-infused bread and were able to pick an herbal tea to accompany it. The goal was to use what the audience had just learned to pick the herb that most closely aligns with their taste preferences. It was a chance for the audience to make an informed decision based on the knowledge gained from the lecture.

La Botanica was held so that attendees could have a deeper appreciation for all that herbs and spices have to offer. It also shows the way that AUF fosters culture between its students and the Florence population. With more PCC events each week, the university's goal of community thrives.

“La Botanica is just one example of what we can achieve when we work together,” Ricci said. “I can’t wait to see what comes next.”
